ANNOUNCEMENTS

Finding Money for College
Wednesday, December 02, 2009, 7:00 PM
Vashon Library

Doug Briethaupt, College Planning Network, will help parents and teens identify sources of financial aid for college, evaluate the costs of specific schools and review the process of applying for financial aid. Each family will learn how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and estimate their “family contribution.”  Please register at the Vashon Library, 206.463.2069. Sponsored by Friends of Vashon Library.

Weather-Related School Closure
The onset of bad weather—snowfall, high winds—can force the closure of Vashon Island schools.  If schools close, FamilyLink consulting appointments and enrichment classes also will be cancelled.  You can stay informed about closures and change of schedule by tuning in to local radio and TV stations or via the internet at www.vashonsd.org, or www.schoolreport.org.

H1N1 Precautions
H1N1 virus is beginning to spread through Vashon schools. Although this is not a severe flu, it is very contagious. Please keep sick children home if they show flu-like symptoms. They should stay home for at least 24 hours after a fever breaks without the use of fever-reducing medications. Also, in case your child becomes sick while you’re away from home, please have a back-up plan. The best way to do this is to review the emergency contact information on your student’s enrollment card and keep it up to date.

To avoid getting sick:
Sneeze or cough into a tissue, elbow or sleeve. Throw the tissue away.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, or an alcohol-based cleaner, especially after you cough or sneeze.
Gargle twice a day with mouthwash or salt water
Clean nostrils with salt water twice a day
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
