Open House for Prospective Out-of-District Students: January 13
VHS will host an open house on January 13th from 9 am until 10:30 am. Prospective out-of-district students and their families are invited to attend. For more information, contact counselor Linda Mather, 463-9171, extension 505.
Running Start Informational Session: February 9
Students and parents interested in learning more about the Running Start program are invited to attend an informational session at the VHS library Tuesday, February 9 from 6:30 until 7:30 pm.
Anti-Defamation League Youth Leadership Mission
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is hosting a Youth Leadership Mission March 21-24 in Washington, DC. Twenty delegates (sophomores and juniors) from our region will be selected to participate; the mission will be provided at no cost to participants. The goal of the mission is to foster understanding among diverse groups by using the lessons of the Holocaust and relating them to contemporary issues. The focus will be the role youth can play in breaking the cycle of hate. Prior to the mission, three mandatory meetings in Seattle will be held to plan the trip and educate participants. For more information on expectations and application requirements, see Ms. Martin (junior counselor) or Ms. Haworth (sophomore counselor).
Next Step Series
A series of programs are being offered during selected late arrival dates. Sessions run from 9 am until 9:40 in the VHS Library. Although all sessions are free of charge, students should register in the Career Center prior to the late arrival day.

Awareness and Insight Lunch Groups
Starting Oct. 13 and Oct. 15, Vashon Youth & Family Services will sponsor lunch-time weekly groups for students interested in making healthy choices and thoughtful decisions about their lives. Students will be able to discuss social pressures and explore options in a safe environment; lunch is provided. For more information about these groups, contact Laurie Martin or Susan Haworth.

UW Mini-Medical School
Mini-Medical school is a 6-part series of exciting lectures and demos designed to teach you about medical school, patient care and cutting-edge research under way at the University of Washington. Each week’s presentation will broaden your knowledge of anatomy, physiology and common diseases. In particular, the Feb. 3 session may be of interest to students: “The Road to Becoming a Doctor”. Seating is limited and registration is first come first served. Deadline to register is January 31, 2009. In lieu of tuition, a donation to the Medical School is recommended. Community Service Project Opportunities:
♦Seattle Aquarium: Immerse yourself in Marine Science at the Seattle Aquarium this school year and complete your Community Service project for graduation at the same time. Teens (16-18) are trained to give formal talks, become tour guides, monitor and interpret exhibitions & help with special events. Requirement: Work three 5-hour week-end shifts per month (Dec-June) and occasional weekday shifts during the school breaks. A MANDATORY orientation meeting will be held on Saturday, October 4 from 11-12 p.m. or Tuesday October 7 from 5-6 p.m. in the upstairs Auditorium at the Aquarium. ♦McMurray Robotics League: Teen mentors are needed to work with the robotics team. Meetings are held Tuesdays 3-4:30 and Saturdays 9-11. The team will travel to competitions later in the year. ♦Camp Fire Group Leader Assistant: a 5th grade girls group would like a teen mentor (girls only!) to meet with them monthly throughout the school year. ♦Vashon Youth Corps: Learn about Vashon’s forests AND how to turn logs into lumber AND earn Community Service hours all at the same time! Students work after school for about 8-10 hours per week learning how to inventory and monitor forests, plant seedlings, remove invasive weeks, and build trails.
